Designing a Collection Strategy That Actually Matches Your Buckets
1 min read
A single collection script applied across every delinquency bucket is one of the most common reasons recovery rates plateau below potential.
Early-bucket accounts (0-30 DPD) respond well to automated reminders and light-touch calling — the goal is retention, not confrontation. Escalating too aggressively here can damage otherwise recoverable relationships.
Mid-bucket accounts (30-90 DPD) need a mix of structured calling cadences and, where appropriate, field visits to re-establish contact with borrowers who have gone quiet.
Hard-bucket accounts (90+ DPD) require a different calculus entirely — skip tracing, legal notice preparation, and a clear-eyed assessment of realistic recovery value versus the cost of continued pursuit.
The teams that consistently outperform build their bucket transitions around behavioral signals, not just days-past-due — a borrower who engages but can't pay is a very different case from one who has gone completely silent.
